The Waddell Report (1978)
School examinations Report of the Steering Committee established to consider proposals for replacing the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level and Certificate of Secondary Education examinations by a common system of examining Chairman: Sir James Waddell CB Presented to Parliament by the Secretary of State for Education and Science and the Secretary of State for Wales by Command of Her Majesty July 1978 London: Her Majesty's Stationery Office 1978
Part I: Cmnd 7281-I
Notes on the text The full text of the report is online, with two exceptions in Part II: Appendix D of the Report of the Education Study Group and the Annexes to the Report of the Cost Study Group are shown only as summaries. The organisation of the Waddell Report was rather complicated! It was published simultaneously in two parts in separate volumes (though the text presented here was scanned from an edition which included both parts, but with separate paginations). Part II was further sub-divided into two: the reports of the Education Study Group and the Cost Study Group. The chapters in these two reports were separately numbered. I hope the way I have presented the Report makes these divisions clear. The chapter numbers in Part I were shown as Roman numerals: I have changed these so that they are consistent with Part II. No ISBN number was given for Part I; the ISBN number for Part II is 0 10 172811 5. Since there aren't pages as such in this web version, footnotes - which were shown in the text by asterisks - have been numbered and collected together at the end of each chapter. (A couple of brief explanatory footnotes in Part II have been inserted into the text in parenthesis). I've updated a few spellings (textbook instead of text-book, coordination instead of co-ordination etc) and corrected a handful of printing errors. All the tables in the report are shown as links in the text: clicking on one opens the relevant table in a pop-up window. Anything added by way of explanation is shown [in square brackets]. Every web page includes chapter links (as in the left hand column on this page) and there are links to the next and previous chapters at the bottom of each page. I have proof-read and spell-checked the text, but if you spot any errors I'd be grateful if you'd email me. Other than the above, what you see here is what appeared in the original print version of the report. |
