The Norwood Report (1943)
Curriculum and examinations in secondary schools Report of the Committee of the Secondary School Examinations Council appointed by the President of the Board of Education in 1941 London: HM Stationery Office 1943
Notes on the text The full text of the report (including the Appendices) is online. It was scanned from the 1944 reprint. There were few footnotes in the printed version and these were not numbered but indicated by asterisks. Since there aren't pages as such in this web version, I have collected them together (and numbered them) at the end of each chapter. There was no paragraph numbering. The chapter numbers in each of the three parts began at I. I have renumbered them so that they run consecutively throughout the document, but I have indicated the original numbering under the title of each chapter. I've modernised the punctuation so that, for example, " secondary " is shown as 'secondary' and I've removed most of the unnecessary capitalisation. However, the term 'Secondary School' has been left capitalised for reasons which are explained at the beginning of chapter 1. The term 'Main school' is used throughout the report (I've removed the capitalisation). It indicates the course at a secondary school up to but not including the sixth form - i.e. covering ages 11 to 16. I've updated a few spellings (timetable instead of time-table etc) and corrected a few misprints. Like many older reports, Norwood contains some very long paragraphs which are not easy to read on a computer screen. I have, however, left the paragraphing as printed in the original. I've added explanations to a few archaic words which are no longer in common use. Anything added by way of explanation is shown [in square brackets]. Every web page includes chapter links (as in the left hand column on this page) and there are links to the next and previous chapters at the bottom of each page. I have proof-read and spell-checked the text, but if you spot any errors I'd be grateful if you'd email me. Other than the above, what you see here is what appeared in the original print version of the report. |
