Education in England aims to provide students, teachers, lecturers and researchers with historical information including the full texts of some important documents.

The site is divided into three main sections which can be accessed using the buttons at the top or bottom of every page. (The Home button always brings you back to this page).

History

Education in England: a brief history was completely rewritten and updated in 2007. It tells the story of England's schools from around 600 to the present. In addition to the main text (40,000 words in six chapters), there's also a timeline of major events and education acts, a glossary, a bibliography and an updates page.

Documents

Here you'll find the full texts of 17 important education reports published between 1867 and 1992, including all six Hadow Reports (1923-1933), the Plowden Report (1967), Bullock (1975), Warnock (1978), Cockcroft (1982), Swann (1985) and Elton (1989). There are also a couple of major HMI survey reports and a number of booklets published by the DES.

Articles

This section contains just about everything I've written about education since 1987. There are 28 articles (including major pieces on faith schools, academies, creationism and school meals), my MA thesis and 14 book reviews. It also includes several school policy documents and my five attempts at writing fiction.
